A sun-warmed apple pie sits ready, after judging, to be sliced and distributed to the hungry public. Sept. 15 marked the first Solvang Third Wednesday apple pie contest. Pies were divided into two categories: professional pies and home-baked pies. The winner in the home-baked category received a blue ribbon and $50, courtesy of Solvang Third Wednesday. Once a panel of three judges – including Journal reporter Isaiah Brookshire – had tasted each pie, the pies were sliced and sold for a donation. The tasty treats were judged on appearance, crust, filling and overall taste. Next Third Wednesday, a Jack-in-da-Hood cruise is planned. The Oct. 20 cruise will feature a wide array of carved pumpkins in Solvang’s west end.
