‘New Perspectives’ in Los Olivos

Gallery Los Olivos will present “New Perspectives,” a new members’ show, from Feb. 1 to 28, with works spanning genres from skyscapes to plein aire to figurative and beyond.

The show will be highlighted by an artists’ reception on from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 7, during which some of the artists will be on hand to answer questions and discuss their work.

The gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and it is located at 2920 Grande Ave., Los Olivos.

 

‘Schoolhouse’ at St. Mark’s

The Schoolhouse Music Evening will take place at 8 p.m. Jan. 31 at St. Mark’s-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church in Los Olivos, with the Pacific Trio in performance.

There will also be an admission-free informal concert for the community at 3:30 p.m.  Members of the trio are Roger Wilkie, violin; John Wale, cello; and Edie Orloff, piano.

‘Passport’ geared to kids

The Santa Barbara Educators Roundtable is offering every student in the county a passport to Santa Barbara, allowing free admission to 25 area educational institutions through the end of April.

The passport booklet permits kids in kindergarten through sixth grade an opportunity to visit the community’s educational institutions. Each child can take one adult companion, for free, to the various institutions.

The passport will provide admission to attractions such as Art From Scrap in Santa Barbara, Cachuma Lake Nature Center, Elverhoj Museum in Solvang, Ganna Walska Lotusland in Montecito, Rancho La Patera and Stow House in Goleta, Santa Barbara Zoo, Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum and Carriage House and the Wildling Art Museum in Los Olivos.

The booklets are available through Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Barbara, Goleta and Carpinteria elementary schools, the public libraries and from the roundtable Web site at http://sbert.org/programs.  

 

Neville Bros. bring R&B to UCSB

The Grammy-winning Neville Brothers, Art, Charles, Aaron and Cyril will bring their brand of New Orleans rhythm and blues to UCSB’s Campbell Hall at 8 p.m. Jan. 29. T

he group of powerful funk and R&B artists has been called “One of the best live bands in the country” by Billboard magazine.

‘Buried Child’ at Ensemble

Sam Shepard’s “Buried Child” opens at the Ensemble Theatre Company in Santa Barbara’s Alhecama Theatre Jan 29, and will run through Feb. 22.

Called “a darkly comic tale of a Midwestern family with a terrible secret,” the play won a Pulitzer Prize in 1979.

It revolves around Vince, who brings his girlfriend home to Illinois to meet the family. The farm’s once-barren land is sprouting sturdy crops but all is not right.

The cast includes Leonard Kelly-Young, Anne Gee Byrd, Geoffrey Lower, Louis Lotorto, Graham Miller and Kate Steele.

Performances are scheduled Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 and 7 p.m. Low-cost preview performances will be given Jan. 29 and 30, with the official opening night Jan. 31.
