Rifle club sign-up begins

Club activities are scheduled to begin on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Santa Ynez Valley Union High School old gym with sign-up for boys 11-19 years of age and for girls and women of all ages.

The club has been shooting at the local high school since it was founded in 1951 by Henry Skytt. It teaches more than just shooting skills to youngsters. Dick Agin, rangemaster and instructor for the group, said that large doses of discipline and self-control are required to obtain the top ranking of “distinguished expert.”

Shooters learn to hit NRA-approved paper targets with .22 caliber rifles inside the old gym. Santa Ynez High School is the only school in California that has an on-campus shooting club which allows firearms on school grounds.

Sept. 24 will be the first meeting of the club after the sign-up, according to Bethany Clough, the club’s secretary-treasurer. The club will meet Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. until mid-November, when they will begin at 8:00 p.m.
