Student organizer recognized

UCSB student Chrissy Elles has been named the recipient of the Campus Progress award for Best Student Organizing of an Event.

Ellis, who is from Napa, spent her time last spring organizing an Alternative Spring Break that brought students from across California to learn and become active about climate change.

She was scheduled to receive the award on July 8 at Campus Progress’s 2008 National Conference in Washington, D.C.

 

Conway honored by MDA

Spencer Conway of Goleta was named the recipient of the Robert Ross Personal Achievement Award for California by the Muscular Dystrophy Assn.

Conway, 62, was recognized for his professional success and for “the spirit and determination with which he overcomes obstacles.” He is now eligible for the 2009 Robert Ross MDA Personal Achievement Award to be announced on the Jerry Lewis Telethon on Labor Day weekend, Aug. 31 through Sept. 1.

The other national finalists are Scott Bennett of East Taunton, Mass.; Thomas Bush of Tucson, Ariz; Mindy Huang of Seattle, Wash., and Scott MacCracken of Macedon, N.Y.

Conway is a senior vocational rehabilitation counselor at the California Department of Rehabilitation. He worked as a professional musician, auto mechanic, electronic technician and artist, then returned to school at age 49 to earn a master’s degree in clinical psychology. He had worked as a domestic violence treatment counselor, an at-risk youth counselor and a drug treatment counselor before taking his present position.

 

PCPA asks ‘Lend a hand’

Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts is issuing a call for volunteers to represent the organization at the annual Central Coast Wine Classic. The event runs from July 10 to 13, and because PCPA is a beneficiary it is providing volunteers to help out. The focus is the “big event,” the Rare and Fine Wine and Lifestyle Auction and Luncheon at the Avila Beach Golf Resort on July 12. St. Joseph plans festival

St. Joseph’s Church in Carpinteria will stage its 51st annual summer festival July 11, 12 and 13, with cash raffle drawings throughout each day.

Entrance to the festival and parking are free. Planners say tourists can plan their Carpinteria visit to coincide with the festival.

“Real deal” Mexican food is featured, rides, games for all ages and varied entertainment are planned.

It is customary for families to prepare their own special dishes, and space is available for this at the festival grounds. Food available includes taco de cabeza, pozole, barbecued tri-tip tortas and American food such as beef tacos, hot dogs, French fries, cotton candy. Drinks will include beer, wine, lemonade, iced tea and aguas frescas. 

Among the live entertainment acts will be Sound Effect, and dancing will be encouraged by all ages.

 

Winetasting in the Sunken Gardens

More than 40 area wineries will pour more than 100 wines at the third annual Old Spanish Days Winetasting in the Santa Barbara Courthouse Sunken Gardens on July 12.

This event will serve as the kickoff for the community’s annual Spanish Fiesta. It is sponsored by Elements Restaurant and Catering.

 

East/West displays

‘Human Landscape’

The East/West Gallery in Santa Barbara is showing a survey of nudes in photography, “The Human Landscape,” now through Aug. 1.

The gallery, 714 Bond Ave., Santa Barbara, displays works of Imogen Cunningham, Ruth Bernhard, Edward Weston, Horace Bristol, Rondal Partridge, Mona Kuhn, Judy Dater, Barbara Morgan, Herb Ritts, Horst, and local photographers Sky Bergman, Barbara Parmet and guest curator Greg Gorman.

In a statement about the show, the Gallery announced, “‘The Human Landscape’ represents this idea of body, form, and the transformative ability of art to take us to the faraway nearby, whether reminiscing youthful innocence or seducing the mind’s eye . . . ”

Modern chamber works at MAW

Music Academy of the West will offer modern works in a series of chamber concerts, including one on July 15 at 8 p.m. at the Lobero Theatre.

The program will include: Steve Reich, “New York Counterpoint”; W.A. Mozart, String Quintet in C Minor, K. 406; Samuel Barber, “Summer Music”; Charles Wuorinen, “Spinoff”; and Leos Janacek, “Quartet for Strings, No. 2, Intimate Letters.”
